Walking on the beach in the early mornings, letting the kids frolic in the waves or maybe a Sunday afternoon hike in the nearby mountains. Returning home to panoranic views over ocean, mountain or valley or taking up a watersport and being able to do it on your front doorstep. Maybe just being removed from the city while still being close enough to be convenient. Or maybe it's just as simple as being able to have the freedom and security of knowing it's safe to walk alone or send your kids to the beach on their own.
If this is your idea of a perfect arrangement, there's not much need to look beyond Fish Hoek. Only 40 minutes away from Cape Town down the M3, the quaint, historic fishing town is situated on the False Bay coastline, completely removed from the hubbub of city life. The town, surrounded by mountains spreads from the valley up onto the cliff faces, creating locations with views that are nothing short of spectacular.
Fish Hoek is well known for its swimming beach, with safe waters and day-time shark watchers ensuring family fun-in-the-sun. The water on the False Bay coastline is warmer than that on the Atlantic seaboard and is frequented by bathers of all ages. The Fish Hoek beach (and nearby waters of Noordhoek, Kommetjie, Muizenberg, Boulders and Simon's Town) are also enjoyed by sportsmen all year round. Surfing, scuba diving, lifesaving, sea-kayaking, surf-skiing and hobie-cat sailing are some of the firm favourites. The area also provides great opportunity for cycling, mountain biking, mountain walking or climbing.
The main street and surrounding valley are well equipped to supply all of the conveniences of modern living, including a Woolworths food market, CNA, pharmacy, basic clothing stores, gymnasiums, doctors, alternative healers, banks and fast-food outlets, while still retaining its quaint charm. Longbeach shopping mall is a mere ten minute drive away and also has a movie house. There is no shortage of hearty and vibey eating spots in the area with Kalk Bay, Simon's Town and Muizenberg only a short drive away.
